How to Stop and Start Services Before and After a Backup
Follow the steps below when you would like to instruct your Backup Client to stop certain services before a backup session and automatically restart these same services when the backup session is complete.
Go
to Tools > Manage Backup Sets Wizard.
Select
the appropriate Backup Set from the list.
Choose
Modify.
Navigate
through the Wizard until you see the Special Items panel.
Press the Select Services button.
Select the name of the service you want to stop before a backup session begins and press the Add button.
Press
OK and continue through the Wizard and press Finish to save
your settings.
If you are backing up a Windows 2000 computer, this version of Windows does not support Volume Shadow Services (VSS). As a result, Windows 2000 does not allow for backing up of Open Files through the Open File Add-On. The Stop/Start Services feature can be used on a Windows 2000 Server to stop services that are locking files and preventing their backup.
You might want to consider using this as a fall-back scenario in case the Open File portion of Backup for Workgroups encounters a problem interacting with VSS. In the event that the Backup Client cannot interact with VSS, the Backup Client uses the Stop/Start Services that you define.
